From November 2022 to May 2025, the regional project “Social participation of people on the move and local population in host regions of the Western Balkans” commissioned by German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ in partnership with NALAS as a strategic partner, was carried out in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and North Macedonia.
The project focused on enhancing the professional and life skills of people on the move and members of local communities through tailored training programs, and fostering social cohesion through cultural, dialogue-based, and sports-related activities.
Working closely with key stakeholders in migration management, the project implemented capacity development activities which improved the knowledge and capacities to engage and treat people on the move in a more gender-sensitive and conflict transformative manner.
At a broader level, the project focused on improving the coordination and management of mixed migration flows at the local level. It also initiated policy dialogues aimed at unlocking the economic potential and opportunities of improving the access of asylum seekers in the labor market.
Thus, in the frame of the NALAS implemented project “Exchange of good practices on sociocultural participation of people on the move in host communities in the Western Balkans” number of dialogue formats, regional events and capacity development measures were organized and implemented aiming at strengthening local governance capacities to better deal with mixed migration flows. These initiatives contributed to better migration governance, increased regional cooperation, and enhanced socio-cultural participation of people on the move.
