The 20th NALAS General Assembly commenced today in Varazdin, Croatia, with the Regional Conference “The role of local governments in evidence-based policymaking for social Inclusion and advancing the EU integration process”, jointly organised by NALAS and the Association of Cities from the Republic of Croatia, with the support of GIZ.

The event gathered more than 60 mayors, local government representatives, members of local government associations, and partners from across South-East Europe, who explore how local governments can shape inclusive policies based on data and evidence and contribute actively to the EU integration process.
Mr. Dusan Raičević, President of NALAS and Mayor of City of Bar in his opening address said: “This conference takes place in a crucial moment for our region. As local governments, together with our national associations, we stand on the front lines of addressing social challenges, ensuring that no one is left behind. Eu integration is not just a political or economic aspiration, it is a commitment to inclusive development, where local governments play a decisive role in implementing reforms that directly impact citizens’ lives”.

Mr. David Oberhuber, GIZ Country Director for North Macedonia and Kosovo highlighted that “the latest EU progress reports show basic to moderate preparedness of the Western Balkans economies for implementation of Chapters 19 and 23. Intensified efforts are needed to advance their preparedness to meet the EU requirements in the field of social policy and employment”, said Mr. Oberhuber.

The two conference sessions included deliberations by distinguished speakers from local governments and their associations, central government institutions, EU Delegation, social inclusion experts and practitioners.

NALAS Position Paper on Social Inclusion and Migration Governance was adopted by NALAS General Assembly, providing concrete recommendations for stakeholders at all levels to advance jointly towards the alignment of social protection schemes with EU requirements.
