Task Force on Urban Planning meeting in Ljubljana, 26 October 2007

Each expert presented the situation in the respective countries. Proposed pilot municipalities for the project "Integration of Informal Settlements" were also presented. Additional two week period has been given to all experts to submit formal applications for the pilot municipalities. It was agreed that the selection of pilots will be done roughly following the criteria below:

  • Minimum number: 1000 - 2000 informal units
  • It should be a typical informal settlement
  • There should be a functioning planning department in place in the municipality
  • The informal settlement should make a compact uniform unit
  • The local authority should be open and interested to resolve the issue

The short-listed municipalities will be presented at the Urban Planning workshop scheduled on 13 December in Bucharest.

Two surveys will collect important information for the current informal settlements across the region, as well as for laws that affect their legalization. The sample surveys are available for download on this page.

The Task Force developed an Operational Plan for activities which are to be taken in the next 6 months. The Operational Plan is available for download on this page.

A number of important far-reaching ideas were also presented for the long-term development of this task force. Those include future project development, development of a regional training center, establishment of regional local governments' fund for urban planning, establishment of mayors' academy etc.
